Extremely oily skin
Extremely oily skin (seborrhea) is caused by excessive sebum secretion by the sebaceous glands. Sebum is an oily substance. Sebaceous glands are spread all over the body, except on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. The sebaceous glands on the face, neck and chest are quite large in contrast to the sebaceous glands on other parts of the body. These glands are located in the dermis and are connected to a hair follicle. As a result, the sebum ensures that the hair is kept supple.

How oily skin develops
The majority of the population has normal to oily skin or oily skin. Oily skin is common in young people, where the so-called T-zone is particularly affected. A characteristic of oily skin is that it becomes increasingly shiny during the day. Hereditary factors and hormonal influences play a role in the development of oily skin. Male hormones (androgens) in particular play a role in this. Due to an increase in these hormones during puberty, but also because the sebaceous glands become more sensitive to these hormones, the sebaceous gland produces more sebum. As we get older, sebum production decreases again. Oily skin is the basis for a number of skin diseases, particularly acne and rosacea, but a relationship with pigment is also known.
Oily skin says nothing about the hydration of the skin! Oily skin can also be dry and irritated by, for example, the use of the wrong skin care products and by environmental influences, such as UV radiation, heating and air conditioning.
