What does acne mean?

Treating acne. Acne is one of the most common skin problems. Acne vulgaris (ordinary acne or pimples) is an inflammation of the hair-sebum complex. A combination of excess sebum production, bacteria and increasing thickening of the epidermis causes white and blackheads, papules, pustules and sometimes cysts.

The term teenage pimples refers to the fact that acne often begins in the teenage years. Pimples can appear on the face as well as other parts of the body, such as the back and chest.

There are different types of skin conditions. Nowadays we also use the term “maskne”: acne caused by wearing face masks. Acne can also cause acne scars.

Types of Acne

Acne comes in different forms. Common types of acne include:

Acne Comedonica (Acne grade I)
Here comedones (blackheads) are particularly visible. We distinguish between closed and open comedones, white heads and black heads.

Acne Papulopustulosa (Acne grade II)
With this type of acne we mainly see the inflammations that are in the foreground, so-called pimples.

Acne Conglobata (Acne grade III) and Acne Cystica
this is a severe form of acne with large pustules, cysts and scarring

Acne Ecopica also known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa
this is a condition in which chronic inflammation occurs in which in addition to comedones and pimples, passages and cavities also develop with large abscesses. Occurs mainly in armpits and groin.

Acne Fulminant
is a rare and severe form of acne in which acne breakouts with abscesses and tissue death occur. Accompanied by fever, bone pain etc.

Acne Mechanica
This type of acne can affect anyone. It is caused by excessive heat, pressure, and friction on the skin, such as during sports or outdoor activities.

Acne Venenata
also called cosmetic acne or contact acne is often seen in (dark) skin when, for example, greasy products are applied.

Acne Excoriée des jeunes filles
This is more often seen in pubescent girls, hence the fancy term acne excorieé des jeunes filles. But it occurs in both sexes and at any age and is caused by someone damaging their skin by scratching a pimple.

Acne Neonatorum and Acne Infantum
as the name suggests, this is a form of acne in babies. It occurs a few weeks after birth and always heals by itself without scarring.

Acne Tarda
is a form of acne that begins to occur after the age of 25. Increasing hormone production increases sebum production, which can cause acne.

Acne Keloidalis
is keloid (wild flesh) formation around hair follicles caused by acne or inflammation of hair follicles. Occurs mainly in dark men.

The most important advice is: stay away from your inflammations as much as possible. Pinching and scratching only makes it worse. Do not experiment with remedies yourself, because the cause and therefore the solution is different for everyone.
